Senator Jeremiah Koung Leads MDR Political Party Ahead of 2023 Elections

Nimba County- Senator Jeremiah Koung has officially taken over as political leader and standard bearer of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) from Senator Prince Y. Johnson of Nimba County. Sen. Prince Y. Johnson, the political party’s founder and a senator from Nimba County, has given Jeremiah Koung his blessing to assume the position of Standard Bearer and lead the Party’s operations in preparation for the 2023 General and Presidential Elections.

The MDR recently broke ties with the Coalition for Democratic Change government headed by president George Weah, alleging that the Weah-led government has refused to incorporate its members into key government positions.

The political leader of the MDR, senator Prince Johnson, pledged support for the CDC during the second round of voting between the Unity Party and the CDC during the 2017 national general and presidential elections. That backing gives the CDC an advantage over the UP in the heavy electorate county of Nimba, but the contentious senator recently declared that the MDR is no longer in favor of the current system because it did not follow the Party’s requests to appoint Nimbaian citizens to ministerial positions in the CDC government. But it is unclear whether the new political leader who won the 2020 Senatorial election under the sway of the existing ruling party will support Senator Prince’s cause.

The Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction has chosen Jeremiah Kpan Koung of Nimba County as its new flag bearer. On a white ballot, Senator Koung was chosen as the Party’s political leader in its second national convention, which took place on December 22, 2022, at Jackie’s Guest House in Gompa City, Nimba County.

Senator Jeremiah Koung announced his intention to run for president in the upcoming general and presidential elections in 2023 in a brief statement after being chosen as the new representative of Nimba County’s operational leadership. He noted that he is aware of the political climate in the country and has already tested the water three times.

He claims that his goal in running for president is to change the nation, saying that the residents of Nimba County can attest that the choice wasn’t unexpected. According to Senator Koung, it is now time for the Liberian people to recognize his influence on the country’s progress.
