Monrovia, Liberia – Senator Nathaniel Farlo McGill of Margibi County has urged President Joseph Boakai to factor in the previous 12 years of Unity Party leadership when recovering assets, in order to avoid engaging in personal vendettas against specific persons.
Senator McGill acknowledged his previous position as an executive official and voiced his strong support for the creation of the Office of Assets Recovery Process in a message that was shared over the weekend on his official Facebook page.
He emphasized that such a process should not be restricted to the last six years, which captured the span of the Coalition for Democratic Change administration. He believes that it is imperative that both current and former government officials be held accountable for their stewardship and any potential misuse of public resources.
In order to ensure fairness and impartiality in the inquiry and recovery of potentially misused assets, the senator from Margibi County stated that transparency in the process is essential. He believes that leaders can show their dedication to maintaining the rule of law and integrity in public service by working with the Office of Assets Recovery and any other investigating authorities.
The Senator pleaded with all officials, both past and present, to accept the accountability process and aid the Office of Assets Recovery in their vital task.
During his tenure in the Weah administration, Senator McGill was a pivotal figure in the governing process. Prior to being sencioned by the US government in 2022, the Margibi senator was the minister of state for presidential affairs. Due to his tight relationship with the former president, the senator gained more authority and allegedly took over all domestic matters, while the former president was reportedly focused on foreign commitments.
Many Liberians also accuse the Margibi Senator of embezzling money and resources from the people and committing various acts of corruption. It was also alleged that the senator had connections with ex-warlords and had given them security positions at various institutions and organizations.
