A member of the Sierra Leone Amputees Football Association call on the four Minor River Union Countries to establish a special tournament called, “President George Weah Cup”.
According to Albert Manley Mustapha, the tournament should be played every year in recognition of President Weah’s achievements during his active soccer career days and his current achievements as President of Liberia.
Albert said President Weah is worth to be celebrated in the Minor River Union Region, adding that, his achievements have brought pride not just in Liberia but the entire Africa.
Albert made the disclosure recently when Liberia Amputees National Football team defeated Sierra Leone 1-0 at the Invincible Sports Park in Monrovia in an international friendly.
” As an official of Sierra Leone Amputees Football Association and also a founding member of the Liberia Amputees Football and Sports Association, I want Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ivory Coast to establish a special tournament in honor of President George Weah Cup. The Liberian leader is worthy to be celebrated by us as our own way of appreciating him for his numerous achievements as a soccer player and now as President, Albert said”.
“Since other federations have not done it, I want for us to take the lead in celebrating him every year. Remember, he is the first person to play football and later become president. Are such achievements not worth to be celebrated? he openly asked?”
Mr. Albert Manley Mustapha at the same time wished Liberia good luck for the upcoming Turkey’s 2022 Amputees World Cup tournament in September.
According to him, Liberia has great players to inspire the country in the competition.
He said though Sierra Leone did not make it to the tournament, the presence of Liberia means a lot to the entire Minor River Union Region.
“The Liberian team I saw in the last two African Nations Cup in both Angola and Tanzania (2019 and 2021) can pull a great surprise in this World Cup, that is why I said we are with them as neighbors. The boys played well in both competitions finishing 3rd in Angola and 2nd runners up in Tanzania”, Albert Manley Mustapha concludes.
Liberia amputees national team is paired in group A along with, hosts Turkey, France, and Haiti, but their opening match will be on September 20, 2022, against Haiti.
