Sierra Leone painfully loses to Burkina Faso

Paynesville, Liberia – In the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup CAF qualifiers, Sierra Leone lost to Burkina Faso 1-0 wednesday evening at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, Liberia. Mohamed Zougrana’s goal in the 42nd minute of the fiercely contested match put the Stallions ahead and gave them a significant away win.

Even with a strong second-half comeback, the Leone Stars were unable to equalize. Momoh Kamara, a forward, nearly scraped the post with a long-range attempt, but Augustus Kargbo and Alhassan Koroma failed to test the Burkinabè defense.

Although the visitors maintained their slim lead until the final whistle, coach Mohamed Kallon added new legs halfway through the second half.

With this outcome, Sierra Leone, with 12 points from nine games, is still in third place in Group A, six points behind Burkina Faso in second place (18 points), and eleven points behind leaders Egypt (23 points).

The team will try to improve in their remaining games to cut the gap and end their campaign strongly, even though the loss lessens Sierra Leone’s chances of moving forward.

Following the disqualification of their stadium by CAF and FIFA, Sierra Leone has since chosen Liberia as its home. After the game, speaking to sports fans, they urged the Sierra Leonean squad to keep their stance, pointing out that they may qualify from the zone.

Meanwhile, The Black Stars of Ghana has qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after thrashing Central African Republic 5–0 in their final match.

Cameroon Beats Mauritius 2–0 and Stays in the Race for Direct Qualification. The Indomitable Lions got the job done on the road this Wednesday, claiming a 2–0 victory over Mauritius with goals from Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu and Bryan Mbeumo.
