Monrovia, Liberia – The delegation from the Republic of South Sudan has arrived in Liberia for a week-long study tour with the goal of assessing the country’s public financial management (PFM) and human resource (HR) systems and reforms. Gatluak Gac Choul, deputy director of the Department of Treasury Operations’ Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS), is leading the delegation.
On Tuesday, August 27, 2024, the nine-member group paid a courtesy call on Hon. Anthony G. Myers, Acting Minister of Finance and Development Planning for Liberia, to start their visit. Hon. Elwood Nettey, Comptroller and Accounting General, Deputy Minister for Budget and Development Planning, Hon. Tanneh Brunson, Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs, and Deputy Minister for Administration Bill McGill Jones were among the other senior members of the MFDP management team present.
Throughout the conversation, Mr. Choul conveyed his appreciation for Liberia’s hospitality and underlined that the decision to travel to Liberia was motivated by the two nations’ shared history and the possibility of mutual learning.
According to Mr. Choul, the delegation wants to find best practices that South Sudan may implement by studying how Liberia handled its IFMIS, PFM, and HR reforms.
The delegation was greeted by Acting Finance Minister, Anthony Myers reaffirmed Liberia’s willingness to share knowledge and insights. He also praised South Sudan’s achievements since attaining independence as well as its difficult past.
“South Sudan and Liberia have comparable histories of war, but as we expressed in 2006, we hope that peace will allow your nation to flourish going forward.”
The South Sudan delegation will meet with important members of the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning during the course of the week. These members include Hon. Elwood Nettey, Comptroller and Accounting General, and Hon. Dehpue Zuo, Deputy Minister of Economic Management.
With international cooperation and knowledge sharing, both countries are committed to improving their financial and human resource systems, as this study visit demonstrates.
