Supreme Court of Liberia Sets Former Chief Justice Scott and Three Family Members Free from Life Imprisonment

Monrovia, Liberia – The high court reversed the guilty verdict rendered by the lower court in the homicide of Charloe Musu, the niece of the former Chief Justice, on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

The release of former Chief Justice Gloria Musu Scott and her relatives from prison was the result of a supreme court ruling on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, which determined that the state lacked probable cause to convict the defendants.

Chief Justice Sie-Nyene Yuoh stated in her reading of the court judgment that the standard of proof required to secure a conviction in a criminal case is proof beyond a reasonable doubt, as stipulated by law.

A verdict presented by the jury may be set aside by the High Court if it is contrary to the weight of the evidence and the state has entirely relied on circumstantial evidence, but has failed to meet the standard required by law, according to the ruling.
