Monrovia, Liberia – Following a bail bond submitted to the court, Criminal Court “C” at the Temple of Justice, presided over by Judge Blamo A. Dixon on September 25, 2024, approved and released to his attorneys, former Liberia’s Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah. Tweah and four other individuals are accused of corruption.
Minister Tweah submitted a bail bond US$8,000,000, which is comprised of real estate and land documents. Judge Blamo made the ruling following the former Finance Minister’s surrender to the court for prosecution, along with a bail bond totaling more than $8 million USD.
Tweah was charged on many occasions by state prosecutors with embezzling public funds while in service, along with former Solicitor General Nyanti Tuan, former National Security Advisor to former President George Weah, Jefferson Karmo, and others.
The indictment resulted from an allegedly dubious transaction that the accused conducted between 2018 and 2023. In addition, the court granted him his freedom back until the November 12, 2024, case hearing, which follows the November A. D. 2024 court session.
Defendant Tweah and four other individuals were charged on September 9, 2024, by the Liberian government with Economic Sabotage (fraud on the country’s internal revenue), Misuse of public funds, property, or records, Theft, unlawful distribution or use of public funds, Theft of property, Criminal Facilitation, and Criminal Conspiracy.
State attorneys, meanwhile, accepted the bail bond without raising any issues. On Monday, September 9, 2024, the case was moved to Criminal Court “C,” which is chaired by A. Blamo Dixon and tasked with making decisions. Dixon issued arrest warrants for the former CDC officials, which they produced, but only after getting their respective attorneys’ approval and agreeing to return to court whenever the court requests it. The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) lodged a complaint against the defendants through the Ministry of Justice, which resulted in the three-count indictment.
