U.S. Amb. McCarthy Speaks on 100 million Drugs Case

Monrovia, Liberia – The decision in the $100 million drug case has caused the U.S. ambassador to Liberia to express his disappointment. He asserted that the acquittal of a suspect in both the $100 million cocaine trafficking case and a subsequent human trafficking case is a triumph for Liberia’s legal system.

Amb. Michael Mcarthy stated that even while he is aware of all the specifics of the prosecutions or their defense, he hopes that the verdict does not give cartels of foreign criminals a sign of enforcement leniency.

The diplomat finds it troubling that, despite what appears to be overwhelming evidence, convictions in Liberia could not be obtained. He voiced concern about what the development portends for Liberia’s justice sector while acknowledging the United States government’s help with millions of dollars over the years in capacity development.

According to reports, once the Juray ruled in their favor, individuals accused of bringing the 100 million USD worth of cocaine into the country were freed, causing the Liberian government to lose yet another crucial case.
