Monrovia, Liberia – In order for the Legislature to resume its work on behalf of all Liberians, the US Embassy in Monrovia has urged all sides to maintain composure and find a solution to the Capitol Hill standoff.
The U.S. Embassy stated in a statement on Wednesday that “violence is never the answer and citizens have a right to express their views peacefully.”
The Embassy reaffirmed the need for an open democratic process to settle political disputes. In order for the Legislature to resume its work on behalf of all Liberians, the Embassy made a statement on its Facebook page that read, “We call on all parties to remain calm and resolve the situation on Capitol Hill.”
Several people were hurt when police used tear gas on demonstrators who had assembled at Capitol Hill, the seat of the Liberian government, on Tuesday to express their disappointment of economic stagnation, poor governance, and suffering.
Since majority lawmakers spearheaded a campaign for Speaker Jonathan Koffa to step down due to a conflict of interest, the US Embassy has released statements encouraging calmness and adherence to the rule of law.
