Monrovia, Liberia – The Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia (CIUL) celebrated its 16th anniversary with the exciting “Voice of Liberia” Chinese Song Competition held in Monrovia. Thirteen students received certificates for their performances in this annual event, which showcases students’ talents in the Chinese language through music.
The competition featured various songs and Chinese cultural displays, entertaining the audience while marking the anniversary celebrations. Winners of the 2024 competition included Aisha D. Lansang (Grand Prize), Helton Neingor (First Prize), Mariama P. Kamara (Second Prize), and co-Third Prize winners Chris S. Cooper, Janet Sherrif, and Eric C. Zinna. Merit Awards went to Abraham R. S. Sheriff Jr. and Emmanuel M. Chea, while an Honorary Award was presented to special guest Jusu Nennee Dawolo.
In his remarks, CIUL Director Dexter Sumo reflected on the institute’s achievements, stating, “Since our inception, we have produced competent scholars, and we pride ourselves on our accomplishments.” He described the anniversary as a significant milestone, drawing an analogy between students and soil and teachers as seeds that bear fruit through knowledge.
Sumo highlighted the numerous opportunities available at the Confucius Institute, noting that many students have continued their studies in China. He expressed pride over sending a student to China for a master’s program last year and emphasized the ongoing impact of CIUL.
Co-director Professor Zhou Hongzhuan shared insights on the enduring friendship between Liberia and China, reminiscing about the establishment of the world’s first Confucius Institute in 2004. This set the stage for cultural exchanges designed to foster mutual understanding among nations.
Established in 2008 through collaboration between Changsha University of Science and Technology and the University of Liberia, CIUL has made substantial contributions to cultural exchange and education. As it approaches its 20th anniversary in 2024, CIUL observes its own 16th birthday, celebrating with the theme: “At 20, the Confucius Institute is in its prime; at 16, CIUL is flourishing.”
Despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and economic hardships faced by students, CIUL has made significant strides. In 2021, enrollment reached 1,420, bringing the total to 17,220 students since its founding. CIUL offers various courses, including degrees in Chinese language education, and has successfully placed over 200 students with Chinese enterprises in Liberia.
The institute acknowledges difficulties, including internet connectivity and interruptions in learning. To combat these issues, CIUL is enhancing its outreach by expanding Chinese language teaching outside traditional classroom settings. Initiatives include radio programs like “Chinese in the Air,” aiming to reach more learners despite the limitations of online education in Liberia.
As the first Confucius Institute in West Africa, CIUL plays a vital role in promoting cultural exchange between Liberia and China while offering free Chinese language courses and certification testing for HSK and HSKK. The institute remains committed to providing opportunities for Liberians eager to learn the language and connect with Chinese culture.
