Monrovia, Liberia – A performance evaluation of the University of Liberia’s free tuition policy is presently underway, according to information released by the university’s president, Dr. Layli Maparyan. Dr. Maparyan stated on a local radio station on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, that she and the board will make a decision following the audit.

According to the UL President, following the performance audit, the free tuition policy will either be reinstated, maintained, or modified. As you may recall, former President George Manneh Weah announced on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, that all public colleges in the nation will offer free undergraduate tuition.

Prior to the previous president’s announcement, demonstrations by angry students about tuition and registration had plagued the process, which caused some students to drop out of college.

Tension between the government and students at the University of Liberia over the increase in credit hour fees from L$400 to L$600 per credit hour accompanied former President Weah’s announcement.

Additionally, Dr. Maparyan, the sixteenth president of the University of Liberia, revealed her first 100-day plan to solve the pressing issues facing the state-run institution at her induction ceremony.
Dr. Maparyan promised to fulfill the duties assigned to her in her capacity as university president.

She emphasized that only by working together can the university achieve its actual goal of being great once more, and she pledged to use her training and expertise to lead the institution.

According to the president of UL, she has been more aware of the importance of specific tasks at the university since coming to Liberia, which has led her to include some activities in her first 100 days.
