Monrovia, Liberia – The United Methodist Church’s Bishop-emeritus has declared that the only body with the power to permit same-sex unions in its congregations across the nation is the Liberia Annual Conference (LAC).
At the national day of worship, “Peace and the Sustenance of Biblical Christianity in the United Methodist Church,” on Sunday, June 7, 2024, retired bishop Arthur Kulah made it clear that the denomination is against same-sex marriage because, despite popular belief, it is not a gay church.
“Compared to many churches that I am aware of, we United Methodists are more conservative and democratic in our beliefs and the worship of God with many experienced members. We are also very peaceful, gracious, and nonviolent people.”
Speaking on the just ended global conference in the United States, UMC former Bishop explained that when the topic on same sex marriage was brought on the floor , he was asked to chair the deliberation. He called on the LAC for an emergency meeting to clarify the doubt. “In order to clarify and interpret the conversations that took place at the global conference, our bishop needs to call a special conference.”
“If anyone tells you that the United Methodist Church is now a gay church, please tell them that he or she is lying unless it is agreed by the Liberia Annual Conference.”
He did, however, express regret to Bishop Samuel Quire for the violent attempt on his life in Ganta, Nimba County, and commended the Liberia Council of Churches for efforts aimed at resolving the crisis in the UMC.
