As New Cooperation Framework Targets Human Development, Governance
Monrovia, Liberia – UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia, Madam Christine N. Umutoni, reaffirmed the UN’s longstanding partnership with a new cooperation framework aimed at promoting human capacity development, good governance, rule of law, and sustainable economic growth during a media breakfast held in Monrovia on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, marking 80 years of partnership between Liberia and the UN.
In her remarks, Madam Umutoni emphasized the importance of the new framework in strengthening cooperation between the Liberian government and the international organization. “A wealthy, peaceful, and inclusive Liberia is what we all envision, and the new framework for cooperation reflects that vision. Investment in people, stronger institutions, and sustainable growth that leaves no one behind are its top priorities,” she added.
In line with the government’s development agenda, the framework, which will direct UN operations in Liberia for the next five years, aims to improve human capital, governance and the rule of law, economic diversification, and environmental sustainability, among other important areas, she said.
Liberia’s contributions to the UN from its inception have played a significant role in forming the organization’s development and peacebuilding objectives, according to the UN Country Coordinator. Liberia’s leadership in peacekeeping and dedication to regional stability and democratic consolidation were praised by her.
She continued, “As we commemorate 80 years of collaboration, we also look to the future, one Liberia, one UN, one shared destiny.”
Liberia has been instrumental in promoting the UN’s worldwide mission, according to Madam Umutoni, who acknowledged the country as one of the UN’s founding members in 1945.
Lawrence M. Fahnbulleh, Acting Assistant Minister at the Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs, and Tourism, spoke on behalf of the Liberian government, stating that President Joseph N. Boakai recognized the significance of the UN’s assistance in accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals and other development goals.
He added that the administration praises the UN for its work in sustainable development, peacebuilding, and other areas.
The Acting Minister gave the UN body his word that the Ministry of Information would regularly hold press conferences and invite UN experts to speak in order to increase public understanding of the UN’s function.
“The Government highlights the United Nations’ role in various sectors in Liberia and commends the UN for its support,” he said.
Speaking as well, UN Women Country Representative Comfort Lamptey emphasized the value of investing in women and Liberia as a UN Women priority.
Additionally, she described how UN Women’s normative pillar included assisting Liberia in reporting on its international commitments and converting international norms into national policies.
Madam Lamptey also discussed Liberia’s success in putting its key areas of concern into practice, as well as the significance of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action’s 30th anniversary.
She revealed that UN Women is also assisting Liberia in enacting legislation to prohibit harmful customs like FGM and boost women’s political engagement.
