UP Government Criticized for Repeating Weah Mistakes

Monrovia, Liberia – Reverend Philip S. Blamo, a Liberian clergyman and the chairman of the Citizens Action Committee (CAC), a civil society group devoted to combating injustice, corruption, and human rights, has charged that the Unity Party government is replicating the mistakes made by the previous administration of former President George Weah.

According to Rev. Blamo, Liberians voted for change because they thought the Unity Party would save the nation from injustice, corruption, and poor leadership, but the present government is betraying their expectations.

“When we tried to help correct the old corrupt system, some of you always responded by saying, ‘Even Weah did the same thing.’ But the real question is this, Are we now repeating the same mistakes of Weah’s government?” Rev. Blamo asked.

Regardless of the political party in power, Rev. Blamo stressed that the organization will not remain silent in the face of wrongdoing. He also added that Liberia cannot afford another cycle of failed leadership, in which promises are made during elections but swiftly abandoned once officials take office.

“The people did not vote for the Unity Party to imitate the errors of the Weah government,” he declared. “They voted for change, transparency, and good governance. If the Unity Party fails to uphold these values, then it risks being judged as no different from the government it criticized.”

‎Rev. Blamo also emphasized the responsibility of civil society to hold leaders accountable, reminding President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and his officials that history will remember them not for their excuses but rather for their bravery in addressing Liberia’s governance shortcomings.

The government’s capacity to combat corruption, uphold human rights, and provide justice to its people is what will determine Liberia’s democratic future, he cautioned, calling for immediate reforms.
