The 2021 edition of the Up Country Basketball competition kicked off today in Gompa City, Nimba County with scores of interesting matches. The Upcountry Basketball tournament renamed the Harold Emmett McGowan was initiated in the early 1970s to help promote the discipline among high schools of the central region, which then comprised of Bong, Lofa and Nimba Counties.
The basketball challenge is also a catalyst for academic excellence, discipline and growth of the sport at the national level. The competition kicked off today Thursday, November 4, 2021, with a grand parade on the principle streets of Gompa City led by US Ambassador to Liberia, Michael McCarthy, Youth and Sports Minister, Zeogar Wilson, Deputy Sports Minister, Andy Quamie amongst other.

In the day’s first encounter, defending champions Tubman Gray defeated St. Mary 30:17points, while St. Martins whipped Ganta United Methodist 26:8 points in the second match. Booker Washington Institute (BWI) got a surprise 17:18points defeat at the hands of New Testament high school in the third match of the day.
C. Williams Brumskine also produced a win on the opening day against Carroll High School in the last encounter. The competition continues on this Friday with more interesting matches.
