US Sanctions Tweh and Others for Corruption

Monrovia, Liberia – The Minister of Finance and Development Planning for Liberia, Samuel Tweah, along with Senators Albert Chie and Emmanuel Nuquay have all been Saction by the U S Government.

The U S Treasury noted that, Pursuant to Section 7031(c), the United States is publicly designating Tweah, Chie, and Nuquay, afor their involvement in significant corruption by abusing their public positions through soliciting, accepting, and offering bribes to manipulate legislative processes and public funding, including legislative reporting and mining sector activity. As part of this action, their immediate family members are also designated, including their spouses Delecia Berry Tweah, Abigail Chie, and Ruthtoria Brown Nuquay, and Tweah and Nuquay’s minor children.

Furthermore, on December 8, 2023, the Treasury named Monrovia Mayor Jefferson Koijee in accordance with E.O. 13818 for his involvement in or previous leadership of an organisation that has participated in grave corruption and violations of human rights.

The U S Treasury went on to allege that Koijee had committed grave violations of human rights in addition to corrupt activities like bribery, misuse of public funds, and coercion of anti-corruption investigators to cease any corruption-related inquiries.

With this latest sanction, this constitute four of President Weah Coalition for Democratic Change members within two days. Three of the CDC officials were sanctioned last year by the U S Treasury for similar allegations label on Tweh and others.
