VP Koung Hails UWC-Liberia Scholarship Initiative.

Capitol Hill, Monrovia- Liberia’s Vice President, Jeremiah Kpan Koung has expressed strong support for the United World College(UWC)-Liberia scholarship initiative, emphasizing its vital role in nurturing Liberia’s future scientists and professionals.

In a statement, VP Koung thanked Saye-maye Cole, the program’s national coordinator, for effectively managing the rigorous selection procedure meant to find brilliant high school and college students throughout Liberia. He emphasized that providing young students with opportunities to study various science disciplines abroad will significantly help address the ongoing challenge of brain drain in Liberia.

The Vice President also urged the scholarship recipients to return to Liberia upon completing their studies to contribute to the country’s development. However, in response to recent concerns expressed by certain students, he urged the organizers to confirm the science and medical study programs provided in India.

According to VP Koung, during his recent visit to India, some students reported being denied the opportunity to pursue science courses upon arrival, which has caused frustration among the beneficiaries. He made these remarks on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, during a meeting with a group of scholarship beneficiaries under the auspices of UWC-Liberia at his Capitol Building office.

Earlier, UWC-Liberia’s National Coordinator, Mr. Saye-maye Cole, explained that the recruiting process was extremely tough and aimed at choosing the most qualified applicants who might close the scientific and technology skills gap in Liberia.

Cole was joined by thirteen scholarship recipients who have been enlisted to study in China, India, Israel, and other nations. He stressed that the program demonstrates Liberia’s dedication to putting investment into its young and producing a new generation of highly qualified individuals who will contribute to the country’s development.
