VP Koung Reaffirms Liberia-China Relations at Chinese New Year Reception

Paynesville, Liberia – At a Chinese New Year reception held at the Golden Gate Hotel in Monrovia, Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Sr., vice president of the Republic of Liberia, reaffirmed the nation’s strong diplomatic and economic connections with the People’s Republic of China.

On behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., the Government, and the people of Liberia, Vice President Koung congratulated the Chinese government and people on the start of the new year. The lively ceremony was attended by members of the National Legislature, Cabinet officials, the Diplomatic Corps, the Chinese Ambassador, the Chinese community in Liberia, and other distinguished guests.

The Chinese New Year, according to the vice president, is a time of rebirth, harmony, hope, and prosperity. Although the celebration has its roots in cultural heritage, he pointed out that it also embodies the ideals, discipline, and vision that have molded China’s incredible international journey.

Vice President Koung said, “I believe that one of the most defining stories of our time is China’s transformation into a global economic powerhouse.” He commended China’s human capital investment, creativity, and strategic planning, claiming that these have helped hundreds of millions escape poverty and established the nation as a major player in infrastructure, trade, technology, and global prosperity.

Vice President Koung pressed for a longer-term engagement and closer collaboration between the two countries, stressing that Liberia has admired China’s growth path.

He characterized the relationship between China and Liberia as strategic, courteous, and mutually beneficial, based on a shared desire for growth and prosperity as well as shared ideals of sovereignty. He claims that China has continuously supported Liberia throughout crucial times of reconstruction and change.

The Vice President conveyed his sincere appreciation for China’s evident contributions to the development of Liberia’s infrastructure, especially the ongoing building of the country’s first contemporary overhead bridge along Tubman Boulevard. He described the effort as a lasting representation of camaraderie, collaboration, and mutual advancement.

Vice President Koung also praised China’s capacity-building and scholarship initiatives for young Liberians, emphasizing that funding education is an investment in the country’s long-term future. He underlined prospects for increased cooperation in trade, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, technology transfer, and people-to-people interactions while restating Liberia’s complete commitment to advancing diplomatic and economic ties with China.

Additionally, he emphasized Liberia’s gratitude for China’s leadership on international peace, security, and development concerns while pointing to more expansive opportunities for collaboration that foster multilateralism, stability, and communication.

Vice President Koung said, “May this New Year bring renewed hope, strengthened friendship, and greater cooperation between our two nations. I hope that for many decades to come, the relationship between China and Liberia will only get stronger and more profound.”

Vice President Koung prayed for blessings on both countries and wished the Chinese government and people a prosperous, peaceful, and successful New Year.
