Paynesville, Liberia – Watanga FC defeated Freeport FC 2-1 on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the SKD practice pitch to take the lead in the Orange First Division League standings with 32 points. Emmanuel Sieh, their talisman, was once again at the top of his game, scoring twice to increase their title prospects.
This season, Coach Cooper Sannah’s boys have played 14 games, won nine, and drawn five. They are yet to experience a setback. However, the reigning champions, LISCR FC, had a rough day as they lost 3-1 to Paynesville FC, a freshly promoted first division team. With the same number of games played, the loss drops them to second place with 29 points, while Paynesville FC moved up to third place with 27 points.
The most unexpected development on Wednesday was Globa Pharma’s 3-1 victory over Bea Mountain at Tusa Field. Though they haven’t yet demonstrated their title credentials, the Gold Lads are consistently tipped as strong title candidates at the beginning of every season. They are in sixth place with 25 points after 14 games, 7 points behind Watanga FC, who are leading the table.
Coach Jasper Benfleix’s troops were once again unable to live up to consistency as Nimba Kwado was forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against the LPRC Oilers at home. The Nimba County-based team has 17 points from 14 games, good for seventh place.
After 13 league games, the Rollers are ranked fifth in the standings, while the Yellow Boys are fighting for their fate. With 13 points and two points from safety, they are in 12th position.
