Weah Maintains lead Over Boakai by 5,456 with 98% plus vote count

Monrovia, Liberia – With over 98% of ballots counted, the incumbent George Weah has maintained his lead over the Unity Party candidate Joseph Boakai by a margin of 5,456 votes. The most recent and comprehensive report on the election, which was released by the National Elections Commission, gives the lead to the current president, George Weah, over his primary opponent, Joseph Boakai.

At a daily briefing on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, the Chairperson of the NEC, Davidetta Brown Lansanah, stated that according to the progressive consolidated tallied report, Mr. Weah obtained 791,661 votes, which constituted 43.79% of the total, while Mr. Boakai accrued 786,205 votes, which equated to 43.49% of the total votes.

In the event that neither of the candidates receives more than 50% of the vote, a run-off election will be held. Mr. Weah defeated Mr. Boakai in a run-off election in 2017 by receiving 61.5% of the vote to Mr. Boakai’s 38.5%.
