Monrovia, Liberia – A high-level World Bank group is presently on a field trip in Liberia with the goal of evaluating the nation’s emergency response capabilities and strengthening its response and preparation mechanisms.
To assess current structures and pinpoint weaknesses in the national response framework, the mission which unites specialists in disaster management, health, and development will interact with government agencies, local communities, and foreign partners.
In order to help Liberia become more resilient to natural disasters, medical emergencies, and other crisis scenarios, officials say the delegation’s assessment will guide future assistance initiatives.
The visit demonstrates the World Bank’s dedication to assisting Liberia in strengthening its domestic institutions to guarantee prompt and efficient emergency responses, eventually saving lives and maintaining development gains.
The trip was hailed by government authorities, who said it was a timely intervention given Liberia’s ongoing struggles with disease outbreaks, climate change, and inadequate response infrastructure.
In 2024, Atty. Ansu V. S. Dulleh Sr., the Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), appealed to the World Bank for technical, logistical, and capacity-building support for the NDMA for EPR. He noted that this will enable the Agency to handle emergencies and help lower losses caused by disasters and other hazards.
According to the World Bank, Liberia qualified for an R2R diagnostic evaluation after the NDMA Executive Director requested that the country’s ability to handle crises and complex emergencies be evaluated in order to guide future investments and correct any possible weaknesses in its EP&R systems.
The Ready2Respond (R2R) is a rapid diagnostic tool developed by the World Bank with input from international experts, intended to evaluate a country’s emergency preparedness and response system.
