NaFAA continues to make headlines as the Liberian government has exhibited a strong will in handling monies meant to develop the fisheries industry, according to a World Bank delegation on an evaluation visit to Liberia, impressing the bank’s board to source further resources for the sector.

Sanjay Srivastava, World Bank Practice Manager for West and Central Africa on Environment, Natural Resources, and Blue Economy, said the additional support in the amount of $20 million was approved after the government demonstrated its willingness to successfully manage fisheries through NaFAA.

Mr. Srivastava speaking in the technical office of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority on Monday, May 16, 2022, when a World Bank team arrived for a technical assessment said, the additional 20 million was prompted by the government of Liberia’s assurance that they can really grow the fisheries sector economy very well.

And so far they have shown leadership and motivation to really use the money effectively, and they have laid out clearly a good agenda both on the investment side and on the livelihood side, as well as on the reforms side in terms of the changes they want to bring, the guest noted.

Srivastava praised the fisheries body’s performance under director-general Madam Emma Metieh Glassco, noting that Liberia is one of the countries with a good fisheries program.

It is recorded that the fisheries sector under Madam Glassco and the Weah government continue to make many gains through its engagement and implementations within the sector. From the distribution of fishing nets to operation machines, among others.
