225 Floods victims benefit from Catholic Relief Services

Over 225 flood victims have benefited from the Catholic Relief Services Emergency response program. From July 2022 to the present, there have been several days of heavy downpours of rain in Liberia. This has led to communities being flooded and thousands of families being made homeless, with some losing their valuable possessions, especially in Monrovia and its environs.

Families that have been affected by the flooding, most of whom live in informal settlements and low land, launched an SOS called to the Humanitarian organization and the Government of Liberia for urgent assistance and international partners to help meet their most essential and basic needs as the downpour of rain continues.

The Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Liberia, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), has provided emergency assistance to selected flood disaster victims in three surrounding communities in Monrovia.

The Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Agency, Henry O Williams, intimated that Participants to benefit from this intervention are the most vulnerable (women-headed families; people living with disabilities; the elderly above working age with no source of income; and families living in poor homes with no stable income). He made those remarks on Monday, October 3, 2022, in a joint press statement in Monrovia.

Mr. Williams further noted that participants for the emergency response project were selected from three surrounding communities in Monrovia, adding that they will receive direct cash transfers to enable them to meet their urgent needs.

He however said the 2-month emergency response intervention will target two hundred and twenty-five (225) households from the Battery Factory, Duduville, and Lofa communities respectively.

The Catholic Relief Services Country Manager, Abena Amedormey is quoted as saying thousands of families are devastated by the floods and are seeking humanitarian assistance from the Government and other International Donors.

“There are thousands of families that are affected across the country and need urgent assistance.” Madam Amedormey stated.

CRS Liberia Country Manager among other things said it is unfortunate that her organization cannot cater to the needs of all those affected by floods across the country.

“CRS, unfortunately, cannot cater to all those affected by floods under this emergency response intervention.” She lamented.

Madam Amedormey is however calling on other donors and international partners to join them in bringing relief and hope to families who were highly hit by the devastating situation of floods to meet their basic and social needs, especially for those vulnerable women who have nowhere to go amidst the rainy season.
