Monrovia, Liberia – In accordance with his constitutional powers, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has granted mercy to 38 prisoners from prisons around Liberia.
“A broader vision of rehabilitation and redemption, emphasizing the need for second chances within a fair and humane justice system” is how the Executive Mansion describes this decision.
A thorough review process that ensured accountability and impartiality resulted to the ruling, which was based on Chapter 6, Article 59 of the 1986 Liberian Constitution. Inmates who have served more than half of their sentences, those who have been held past their sentence for minor unpaid restitution obligations, elderly inmates, and those with terminal illnesses were among the selection criteria created to give preference to those who show promise for reintegration.
According to a statement from the Executive Mansion, only those who had demonstrated excellent behavior while incarcerated were taken into consideration, and those convicted of capital crimes or significant felonies were not.
37 Liberian citizens and one foreign individual from China 37 males and one woman were among those who received mercy. They were all found guilty of non-sexual, non-capital crimes. While some of these inmates were housed in prisons around the country, almost half were detained at Monrovia Central Prison.
According to the statement, the clemency program demonstrates President Boakai’s faith in the transformational potential of rehabilitation and the advantages for society of allowing people to start again. It is consistent with a larger effort to make the nation’s legal system more inclusive, egalitarian, and representative of human values.”By granting clemency, we affirm the belief that individuals can be redeemed and contribute positively to society,” President Boakai said in response to the ruling. The country is strengthened by a judicial system that encourages rehabilitation.
The Ministry of Justice, the court, and other parties worked closely together during the clemency process. Liberia’s dedication to justice and the rule of law is reflected in our cooperation, which guaranteed a thorough and equitable review process.
This program sends a strong message about the importance of both justice and kindness. The government shows its commitment to provide possibilities for those who have made amends to society by giving rehabilitation first priority.
This mercy legislation is an important step in Liberia’s continuous efforts to create a just system that is compassionate and firm at the same time, giving worthy people hope and second opportunities.
