Monrovia, Liberia – The former minister of Finance and current Senator of Gbapolu County Amara M. Konneh has described the proposed budget by the ministry of finance as “DO NOTHING BUDGET,” something he said can not undertake development.
“The abreach version of the proposed budget that was submitted to the legislature is a do nothing budget, not from the perspective of paying people or servicing or operating costs, but from a point of view where you can’t do any development work with it. This is the so-called “you eat, you go to the toilet” budget; it merely provides for the seventy to eighty thousand employees in the public sector. It is not utilised to fund investments in hospitals and education, Liberia’s two most significant but now failing sectors.”
Speaking on a local radio show, OK Conversation on Monday, January 15, 2024, in Monrovia, Senator Konneh said that significant budget expansion is required, and that this can only be accomplished by working together.
According to the senators for Gbarpolu County, Liberians are complaining about the high cost of living in the nation and the government’s inability to raise enough money for household expenses is worrying.
He claimed that because business owners have lower incomes, they do not pay taxes, which prevents the Liberia Revenue Authority from collecting enough money each month to cover wages.
Senators Konneh asserted that the harmonization shouldn’t have affected civil servants with lower income, he however urged citizens to remain kind and take ownership of the country’s development.
