Makinto, Nimba County – ArcelorMittal Liberia has started renovating Makinto, Nimba County’s sole public school after a severe storm destroyed it and forced its closure. A construction firm with an exceptional track record of project execution, SORECCO, is carrying out the restoration.
The Safety Officer in charge of the laborers, Daniel S. Sayon, stated at a brief introductory program in Makinto on August 5, 2025, that the work should be finished in two months. Sayon stated that a portion of the floor is completely destroyed, along with the roof and ceiling, thus significant work needs to be done, noting that some individuals from the community will be needed to serve as helpers.
Although the structure is still strong and in good condition, Sayon stated that his crew will touch it up a little before painting.
Harrison Waydon, the Community Relations Superintendent, also spoke and urged the contracting company to prioritize local residents for job openings and to make every attempt to finish the work before school starts.
Mr. Waydon emphasized that any action taken by civilians to obstruct the work will result in consequences for the town’s citizens and cautioned the community from taking items meant for the project in order to prevent delays.
Waydon reported that before the facility was built, Makinto had no school; inhabitants claimed that children had to travel to Sanniquellie to obtain education, leaving those who were unable to do so without education.
Speaking as well, Makinto Town Chief Patrick Beglar gave ArcelorMittal Liberia his word that he and other local officials would collaborate with the contractors to guarantee that the work was completed without any problems.
Mr. Beglar emphasized that they are keeping an eye out for anyone who might try to take the materials supplied for the job, noting that anyone discovered stealing them will be held accountable.
He commended ArcelorMittal Liberia and said, “We have been without a school building for years now. Children leave from here to go to Sanniquellie before attending. We are grateful to ArcelorMittal for coming in to renovate the school with the assurance that before the academic year commences, the building will be completed. We are happy for this news and what we are seeing.”
