Monrovia, Liberia – At the 2024 National Agriculture Fair, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) emphasized its commitment to sustainable agriculture. Farmers aided by AML’s Biodiversity Conservation Program (BCP) showcased the potential of local agriculture by displaying and selling a variety of fresh products, like plantains, cabbages, and native collar grains, at the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) campus in Kakata, Margibi County.
President Joseph Boakai attended the fair, which gave AML-supported farmers a chance to display their produce and make connections with stakeholders and possible purchasers.
These farmers’ involvement supports AML’s initiatives to improve regional food production and advance sustainability in areas impacted by mining.
In order to carry out sustainable agricultural initiatives in Nimba County, AML collaborates with agricultural Relief Services (ARS), a neighborhood community development organization situated in Sanniquellie City, through its Biodiversity and Conservation Program (BCP) project.
Through these initiatives, farmers in 12 towns and villages affected by mines are given the resources, technical know-how, and tools they need to adapt to the difficulties posed by climate change and global warming.
Farmers may increase yields while preserving the environment by frequently receiving instruction in sustainable agricultural practices and biodiversity protection.
A village savings and loan program is also included in the initiative, providing farmers with access to funds to increase their operations and enhance their standard of living.
In light of the increasing effects of climate change in Liberia, including unpredictable seasons and poor soil, which appear to be having a detrimental effect on substance farming methods that are an essential part of the country’s food chain, the assistance is vital.
In addition to improving food security, AML maintains that encouraging sustainable agriculture can lessen the consequences of climate change in rural areas.
It is said that AML’s wider dedication to sustainability is evident in the farmers who received help from the company’s participation in the National Agriculture Fair.
ArcelorMittal’s larger principle of promoting sustainable development and economic empowerment in the areas where it operates is the foundation of its assistance to Liberian farmers.
Understanding how important agriculture is to raising living standards, the corporation has teamed up with regional farmers, civic associations, and interested parties to advance sustainable agricultural methods and increase food security.
ArcelorMittal’s dedication to sustainable methods that benefit both people and the environment is reflected in this effort. The business is assisting farmers in implementing contemporary farming practices that put long-term production first by providing resources and focused training programs.
In addition to increasing production, the goal is to build sustainable rural economies, lessen reliance on earnings from mining, and promote environmental care.
The involvement of underrepresented groups, including women and young people, who are essential to the health of Liberia’s agriculture industry, is at the center of these initiatives. ArcelorMittal is helping local farmers to innovate and prosper in a more difficult economic environment by granting them fair access to possibilities.
The company’s commitment to creating self-sufficient communities and assisting Liberia’s larger economic diversification initiatives is reflected in this endeavor.
