Buchanan, Grand Bassa – With a number of strategic initiatives targeted at improving patient care and streamlining service delivery, the ArcelorMittal Liberia Hospital System started a transformative journey about two years ago. These include the creation of a highly qualified and professional personnel, investments in cutting-edge technology, and improvements to the hospital facilities in Yekepa and Buchanan.

In keeping with this strategy, the company recently added general surgeon Dr. Nathan F. Mahteh to its Buchanan Hospital staff before the hospital’s official surgical operations began. He is one of two surgeons that AML just appointed to lead its Yekepa and Buchanan surgery theaters.

As part of its efforts to enhance services at its hospitals, the company is committed to providing outstanding healthcare services, including minimal emergency surgical operations. This decision represents a substantial advancement in that commitment, according to the company.

Dr. Mahteh, a highly respected surgeon with over eight years of experience in the field, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the AML Hospital. He is renowned for his innovative approaches to surgical procedures and his dedication to patient-centered care.

In addition to earning various foreign credentials, Dr. Mahteh earned his medical degrees from the Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Achille Mario Dogliotti College of Medicine at the University of Liberia. He has served in a number of leadership roles in surgical departments across the nation, including Chief for Surgery at the 14th Military Hospital in Margibi and the Esther & Jereline Medical Center in Ganta.

As well, he has worked at several other hospitals, including John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia, Jackson F. Doe Memorial Hospital in Nimba, Redemption Hospital in Montserrado, J.J. Dossen Hospital in Maryland, and C.B. Dunbar Maternity Hospital in Bong, where he continuously showed a dedication to quality in clinical practice and instruction.

Dr. Mahteh will be in charge of all surgical procedures at the AML Buchanan facility in his capacity as Chief of Surgery. It is anticipated that his leadership would promote a cooperative atmosphere where safety, quality, and innovation are given top priority.

Patients’ trust in the healthcare system has been reassured by Dr. Mahteh, who is enthusiastic about his work and joining AML. “It’s a pleasure coming over to ArcelorMittal Liberia. AML is a nice family that I have found, again. The working spirit here is very good and cooperative. As we prepare to begin surgical operations, I can assure that we will have a good coverage of cases here with positive outcomes. We have a lot of good equipment here that we can work with to produce good results.”

In addition, he promised to improved patient care, which is essential for the recovery from surgery.

“One thing I teach people about surgery is that it’s not only about making a cut; it’s about how you treat the patient after the procedure. Many excellent nurses have been providing patient care here, in my opinion. In order to provide our patients with quality treatment both before and after surgery, those nurses can serve as my support system as I work as a doctor. For me, that is a really good reliance.”

In the upcoming weeks, AML Hospitals in Buchanan and Yekepa will formally begin offering surgical services. A variety of operations, including general surgery, will be available according to AML. This is also reduce burden on the government as AML pledge to improve the lives of Liberians.

“Both surgeons are eager to get started as soon as possible with plans to start offering minimal emergency surgical procedures,” stated Dr. Garfee Williams, Chief Medical Officer at AML.

According to Dr. Williams, the team is on track to start managing and conducting surgeries at the Yekepa and Buchanan hospitals.
