Monrovia, Liberia – In the best-of-five series of the LBA National First Division Championship, the Rollers of Mighty Barrolle defeated the LPRC Oilers for the second time in a row to go to the grand final against Cestos Mongars. The postponed game was played on Wednesday at the SKD Gymnasium. The game was moved to Wednesday, August 21, 2024, due to the jersey conflict, which prevented it from taking place on Tuesday.
While the first playoff game on Sunday, August 18, 2024, ended with 56-42 points, the one-sided encounter finished with 70-39 points. Cestos Mongars and Mighty Barrolle will play a best-of-five series final to decide who would be declared the 2024 League Season champion.
For the first time in many years, Liberian clubs will compete in the FIBA Club Championship when the two finalists represent their country in the upcoming tournament. In order to secure automatic qualification to the grand final, Cestos Mongars also defeated NPA Pythons in two straight games during the play-offs.
This is Cestos Mongar’s first final in the club’s history and Barrolle’s fourth consecutive final in a role. Barrolle has won the previous three league titles, but a leadership conflict at the local federation prevented them from participating in the FIBA Club Championship.
After the disagreement over Abraham Samukai’s election as the Liberia Basketball Association president was resolved, FIBA gave the organization all of its rights back and granted it access to all perks contingent upon qualification.
The junior championship for both male and female under-18 players in Ivory Coast, which is Liberia’s first international competition since 2007, and prior technical help were the first indications of FIBA’s promises in its dealings.
The opportunity to host the 2024 women’s club championship qualifiers later this year has also been awarded to Liberia by FIBA.
