Monrovia, Liberia – The Secretary General of the opposition Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Jefferson Tamba Koijee, has called for Transparency and action in the aftermath of Monday’s presidential inauguration of President Joseph Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung.
Koijee in a press Conference on Tuesday January 23, 2024 demanded the release of President Joseph Boakai’s health report and urged the launch of a criminal investigation into the fainting and death of individuals during the inaugural ceremony.
According to reports, President Boakai was not the only spectator who experienced heat exhaustion during the inauguration ceremony. Doussen Kamara, a Liberian living in the United States, died as a result of heat exhaustion during the ceremony.
With a strong emphasis on how such incidents at an inaugural celebration could damage the nation’s reputation abroad, Koijee emphasized concern for the president’s wellbeing.
While he called for clarity on the circumstances surrounding the president’s health issues during his address, he also noted that an inauguration should not be marred by incidents that could potentially discredit the country and its government in the eyes of the world. According to him, there should be a prompt investigation to determine how the incident happened and guarantee that those responsible are held accountable.
