The Chairperson of the National Commission on Disability has expressed the need for capacity-building efforts towards persons living with disabilities across the country. Madam Daintowon Domah Pay-Bayee said the capacity building will create means for disabled people to feed themselves and curtail the practices of being beggars at different street corners.
The National Disability Chairperson made the statement on Wednesday, January 12, 2022, during her honoring ceremony organized by the Center for the Exchange of Intellectual Opinion, CEIO, for her selfless services geared towards branding the National Commission on Disability.
Madam Pay-Bayee at the same time announced a planned tour across Montserrado County to discover the difficulties of People living with Disability.
In 2005, Liberia created the National Commission on Disabilities. Liberia signed and ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2012. The government also promotes tax incentives for hiring people with disabilities and has a target of 4% employment for people with disabilities.
Awarding a disabled fellow at the Agriculture Fair in Bong County last year, President Weah made these statements concerning the disabled community, “I am here today to give you my fullest support. My Administration will continue to strive to improve the conditions in Liberia under which persons with a disability must live,” the Chief Executive averred. “This will involve further facilitation of the work of organizations working in the sector, including the National Commission on Disabilities, which is overseen by Vice President Taylor in her capacity as Chairperson.”
