Zota District, Bong County – As schools across Liberia reopen for the academic year, dozens of children in Global Village and Kolonta, Zota District, Bong County, remain at homebnot because they lack the will to learn, but because poverty has locked them out of the classroom.
Many of these children are orphans, while others have single parents who find it difficult to feed them every day, making school fees unaffordable.
According to journalist Joseph Titus Yekeryan, who is calling for immediate assistance, “these kids have the same dreams as any other kid who want to learn, develop, and one day help their families and communities. But without help, those dreams will not work.”
Leaders in the neighborhood say the situation is serious. For the simple reason that their parents cannot afford tuition, uniforms, or basic educational supplies, children roam aimlessly while their classmates are in class.
On behalf of these families, Yekeryan has issued an appeal to well-meaning Liberians, local organizations, and aid partners to step in. He emphasized, “We cannot let poverty prevent these children from having the opportunity to sit in class, hold a book, and learn their ABCs.”
A small amount of assistance can have a significant impact, according to the journalist. Even modest donations can go a long way toward paying for school supplies, uniforms, and tuition. “Your assistance today can make them smile tomorrow.”
