Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberian People’s Party’s Political Leader, Cllr. Taiwan Gongloe has warned the government to provide adequate security for every politician running in the 2023 presidential and legislative elections. While the Farmington Declaration and other international partners seek to sustain peace, Cllr. Gongloe asserted that the government should play a bigger role before the elections on October 10.
Gongloe recalled how far Liberia has come democratically and in terms of peace since the end of what he called “the dark days of conflict” in a special statement delivered on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at a session on “Promoting Peaceful 2023 Elections” with the theme, “Building the Confidence of the Presidential Candidates in the Workings of the NEC.”
Since the upcoming elections on October 10 offer Liberians a rare opportunity to solidify their democracy and demonstrate the nation’s maturity in handling its democratic processes, he challenged presidential candidates to prioritize the interests of the Republic both during and after these election processes.
The political leader of the Liberian People’s Party, who is also a presidential candidate, asked presidential hopefuls to set an example by making sure that “the electoral process is transparent and inclusive, thereby guaranteeing the unrestricted rights of every citizen to exercise their franchise peacefully.”
To overcome any obstacles that may come our way, Liberians must embrace dialogue, tolerance, and the spirit of national unity. The Farmington Declaration recently signed, is in the best interests of all, and the government must fully implement it.
The Liberian government’s commitment to providing security for all political leaders during the election process was reiterated by Minister of Justice Frank Musa Dean. The maintenance of peace, according to Minister Dean, is entirely up to all Liberian as foreign partners have invested in the country’s development.
