Monrovia, Liberia – National Secretary General of the Civil Society Human Rights Advocacy Platform of Liberia, Adama Dempster has stressed the importance of protecting human rights defenders during a media briefing on the new strategic framework for the endorsement of the National Policy for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders.
The policy aims to strengthen protection and support for human rights defenders by creating a safe environment where they can work without fear of threats, harassment or intimidation.
The briefing held on Monday, Dempster said human rights defenders continue to play a key role in promoting democracy, accountability, and the rule of law in Liberia. He noted that the policy seeks to establish protection mechanisms and support legal reforms to guarantee the safety of defenders.
Also speaking the Chairman of the coalition, Niedoteh Torbor, called on the Government of Liberia to reconsider the reading of the policy at the next Cabinet meeting, adding that the government has shown commitment to the process from the beginning.
The executive Director of the commission, Urias Teh Pour further emphasized that the policy will provide hope and protection for human rights defenders once fully endorsed and supported by the government.
