Monrovia, Liberia – Momo Cyrus, a senator from Lofa County, has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Liberia Football Association. He pledged to use his position and power in the Legislature to advocate for more financing and national support for sports development throughout Liberia. Senator Cyrus was elected alongside ten other members during the Liberia Football Association Executive Committee elections held on May 15 at the LFA headquarters in Monrovia. Incumbent LFA President Mustapha I. Raji was re-elected unopposed for a third and final term.
During the election debate, Cyrus highlighted major challenges affecting sports in Liberia while stressing the country’s enormous potential to grow and compete internationally if adequate investment is made. As Co-Chair of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports, he said Liberia’s sporting future depends on commitment, passion, and stronger collaboration among administrators, club owners, athletes, and supporters.
“This is not where we want Liberian football to be,” Cyrus stated. “Many of our sister countries are progressing while we continue to lag behind because of inadequate funding.”
According to him, serving on the LFA Executive Committee will provide him with firsthand knowledge of the challenges facing football administration and allow him to advocate more effectively for increased budgetary support at the national level. “Considering my role as a senator and co-chair of the Senate Committee on Youth and Sports, this is a perfect opportunity to understand the problems and elevate them to the national government through the Legislature,” he said.
Cyrus, who also serves as Chief Executive Officer of Wologizi FC, described lack of financial support as one of the biggest obstacles to the development of football, basketball, kickball, and other sporting disciplines throughout Liberia. He pledged to work with Senate Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and fellow lawmakers to advocate for increased funding for the Liberia Football Association during future legislative appropriations.
“Sitting on the Youth and Sports Committee puts me at the table where budget decisions are made. That will allow me to make a strong case for sports at the Legislature,” Cyrus noted.
The newly elected LFA Executive Committee member also said his ambition is to support and strengthen the leadership of the Liberia Football Association while helping create opportunities for young athletes across the country.
In addition to lobbying for government funding, Cyrus promised to introduce innovative strategies aimed at attracting private sector support for sports. He specifically mentioned engaging major companies operating in Liberia, including Bea Mountain Mining Corporation, China Union, and ArcelorMittal, to contribute to sports development through their corporate social responsibility programs.
Cyrus further pledged to dedicate his entire LFA stipend over the next four years toward sports development initiatives, particularly women’s football and the national team setup. “Under our leadership, the Lone Star will shine through our advocacy for funding,” he declared.
He also praised club owners and sports stakeholders who continue to invest their personal resources into keeping sports alive in Liberia, noting that they deserve greater representation and support in national sports discussions.
Before his election to the LFA Executive Committee, Cyrus served as Chairman of the Lofa County Sports Steering Committee, where he led the county to six championships in football, basketball, and kickball during the National County Sports Meet. During his tenure, he also played a major role in supplying football boots, jerseys, and footballs for county teams.
As CEO of Wologizi FC, Cyrus guided the club to victory in the 2024/2025 Liberian Second Division League season, earning promotion to the country’s First Division League.
