Monrovia, Liberia – The Lone Star of Liberia held Libya to a 2-2 tie on Tuesday, March 31, in an international friendly played in Morocco due to late goals from Murphy Oscar Dorley and Sulhmana Bah.
Libya placed Liberia under tremendous strain and looked certain to win after dominating the first half and taking a commanding 2-0 lead. The North African team dominated possession and took advantage of the Lone Star’s defensive shortcomings.
But in the second half, Liberia shown a renewed sense of resolve. Murphy Oscar Dorley, a midfielder for Slavia Prague, started the comeback with a spectacular left-footed goal from inside the penalty area, providing the club a much-needed boost and turning the tide in their favour.
With confidence growing, Malta-based forward Sulhmana Bah leveled the score in the 80th minute, calmly finishing to complete an impressive turnaround for the Red, White, and Blue.
The result has slightly pleased interim coach Christopher Wreh, especially considering Liberia’s previous 1-0 loss to Benin. The two matches are part of the team’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifications as the technical staff works to assess players and promote team unity.
Despite the return, several Liberian supporters voiced divergent views on social media. Others praised the team’s tenacity and ability to recover a two-goal disadvantage, while others pointed out missed opportunities, particularly after Libya was reduced to ten men in the first half.
The Lone Star might have prevailed if they had used their numerical advantage more, according to supporters. Overall, as Liberia continues to get ready for crucial continental qualifications, the draw highlights both their strengths and areas for improvement.
