ECOWAS amd AU Promises to Work with NEC Ahead of October 10 Elections

Monrovia, Liberia – The African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) pledged on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, to cooperate with the National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC) to ensure the success of the General Elections on October 10, 2023.

The promise was made on July 25 by the 13-person joint AU/ECOWAS team following a one-day fact-finding meeting with NEC officials in Monrovia.

Professor Attahiru Jega, the mission’s leader, advised the Board of Commissioners members to act with coherence, unity of purpose, and cooperation to prevent politicians from sabotaging the electoral process in order to further their own personal goals.

According to Professor Jega, some of the delegation’s members will serve on the observer missions that will be sent to Liberia, and they are eager to celebrate the best elections ever held in that country.

He noted that overseeing the ensuing elections “is a responsibility that they must discharge to the best of the abilities of NEC because history will come and absorbed you.”

The NEC Chairperson, Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, praised the delegation’s attendance and called the discussions productive. According to her, the conversation gave the Commission a chance to speak directly about its operations, including any obstacles, and to outline any long-term plans it has for improving the electoral process as we get closer to the elections.

The leader of the AU mission, Ambassador Calixte Mbari, the commissioner for peace and security, Dr. Abdel Fatu Musah, and the chairs of the electoral commissions of Ghana and Senegal are also part of the mission.
