Monrovia, Liberia – Prior to the crucial Presidential and Legislative elections in October, the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL) officially endorsed the Boakai-Koung (Unity Party) Ticket on Sunday, August 13, 2023 through their Commander in Chief, Emmanuel Gonquoi, who also pledged to give the Team the highest level of security during these elections.
Gonquoi stated at a news conference in Monrovia that the suffering of the Liberian people and the lack of employment opportunities for citizens nationwide were the driving forces behind the party’s decision to support the Unity Party. As a result, the executive committee members of the party unambiguously agreed to save the nation from bad leadership.
We must eliminate this dysfunctional system of administrtion, govenmn officials must act in the best interests of the populace.
Although Emmanuel D. Gonqoui, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL), is competing against a Unity Party candidate for the senatorial seat in Margibi County, his unwavering support for the opposition party has sparked a firestorm of controversy.
He disclosed that the EFFL had decided to send out what he dubbed Defender of Revolutionaries (DORs) to protect opposition leaders, citing a lack of confidence in the nation’s security forces. At the same time, Gonqoui alleged that state security forces had become the President’s only guardians a decision that has drawn criticism and accused them of being partial in the performance of their duties. He claimed that these happenings have put both residents and political analysts in a condition of anticipation and uncertainty as the country gets ready for the next elections.
The unexpected alliance between the EFFL and Unity Party, coupled with allegations of political interference from regional bodies, has the potential to reshape the political landscape in unprecedented ways.
EFFL accused the ECOWAS of plotting with President George Weah to rig the Country’s upcoming Presidential and Legislative elections in favor of the CDC. Addressing a news conference on Sunday August 13, 2023 in Monrovia, Gonquoi said there are plans by the CDC Led-government and ECOWAS to rig the October 10, presidential and Legislative elections in the country. Gonquoi further stated that the action by ECOWAS in the sub-region clearly indicates that it has being used by western colonial powers to cause instability in West Africa.
Elections in the region are stolen by ruling governments while others are allotting unto themselves unlimited terms in the presence of ECOWAS without any position because ruling parties usually provide kickbacks to their so-called representatives in the name of former Heads of State who are usually sent to monitor elections across the region.
Gonquoi claimed that ECOWAS has increasingly become useless in the context of providing regional leadership; the once cherished ECOWAS’ core values of promoting good governance with emphasis on rule of law and regional economic growth and integration has in recent years taken nosedive by becoming Presidents’ club pageantry.
since the start of the elections, ECOWAS has been involved with the campaign process something he said is a genuine plot by the ECOWAS to steal these elections results in favor of the ruling government of former soccer legend George Weah.
With emotions running high and the future of Liberia’s democracy hanging in the balance, the only certainty is that the nation is headed for uncharted territory. The EFFL’s support for the ‘rescue mission’ and its unprecedented move to protect opposition leaders are sending shockwaves through the political establishment.
As the countdown to the October polls begins, the nation watches with bated breath to see how these dramatic events will unfold, and whether Liberia’s political trajectory will be forever altered.
