Faith and Justice Network Calls on CDC and UP to Exhibit Good Morals

DURING AND AFTER 2023 PREIDENTIAL RUN-OFF

Monrovia, Liberia – The Faith and Justice Network, a democracy advocacy group, has urged the Unity Party and the Coalition for Democratic Change to behave honorably during the national campaign trail leading up to the November 14, 2023, runoff election for president. Samuel Quire, a United Methodist bishop and the chairperson of the network’s board, stated that since the world is watching Liberia, any unfavorable move will reflect poorly on the nation’s commitment to democracy.

Bishop Quire warned lawmakers affiliated with the UP and CDC to conduct their campaigns responsibly and with the utmost decorum and respect during a press conference in Monrovia.
The board chairman of the Faith and Justice Network asserts that it is crucial to preserve Liberia’s peace and stability during this critical period in the country’s history.

Bishop Quire made it quite evident that for Liberia’s presidential run-off election to be successful, all parties involved must assume collective responsibility. He continued that during the October 11, 2023, presidential and parliamentary elections, he praised Liberians for their conduct and said, “Your commitment to the democratic process and peaceful participation is commendable.”

“We acknowledge the hard work of NEC and our international partners in organizing a credible and more peaceful electoral process. The integrity and transparency demonstrated by NEC and the collective responsibilities of all stakeholders in ensuring the success of the elections are a demonstration of the progress we have made as a nation in upholding democratic values.”

The UMC bishop praised the Unity Party and the Coalition for Democratic Change for their dedication to democracy and willingness to compete in Liberia’s upcoming presidential runoff election, which is scheduled for November 14, 2023. According to him, the political elites’ commitment to preserving the values of justice, morality, and deference to the law will determine how well the nation’s democratic transition turns out.

“We must preserve Liberia’s peace and stability during this crucial time, and let’s abstain from hate speech, incitement, and actions that could jeopardize the unity and security of our country. Let’s be model citizens and demonstrate to the world that Liberia is a leader in democracy in the region by allowing the electorate to make educated decisions without fear or intimidation. We emphasized the importance of remaining peaceful and law-abiding during the electoral process because our participation in the elections is integral to our democracy.“

Bishop Quire encouraged all citizens to follow the due process of the law and turn to the Supreme Court of Liberia because it is the legitimate channel for addressing electoral malpractices, adding, “We trust the impartiality of the judiciary.”

As the proper avenue for resolving electoral irregularities, Bishop Quire urged all Liberians to follow the law’s due process and consult the Supreme Court of Liberia, saying, “We trust the impartiality of the judiciary. Let the run-off elections be a testament to our nation’s commitment to democratic values and our vision for a brighter future. Let us remember that the future of Liberia lies in our collective commitment to peace, justice, and democracy, because, together, we can build a nation that stands as a shining example of unity and progress. With the grace of God, we remain a unified and peaceful nation, guided by the values of justice, integrity, and togetherness, and wise enough to select a route towards peace and growth.”
