The Liberian government and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) provided financial payments to a number of floor victims from the plumkor community in Brewerville over the weekend as part of their rehabilitation efforts. The National Disaster Management Agency’s Deputy Executive Director for Operations, Augustine Tamba, told reporters over the weekend in Plumkor Community that the cash disbursement is a part of its recovery plans for the most vulnerable people affected by the floods in the community and nearby areas.

In Montserrado County, 48 communities were reportedly affected by the rainy season. He claimed that 9 of these communities were targeted for the cash transfer, with a total of 1000 households expected to benefit across all 9 communities, with Plumkor Community receiving cash transfers for 110 households. Mr. Tamba continued that the National Disaster Management Agency is fully aware of the many services the IRC has provided and continues to provide to the Government and People of Liberia and that it is one of the organizations that are most helpful and consistent partners in recovery action plans for victims of disasters.

The International Rescue Committee’s (IRC) country representative, Madam Diana Bedell Mejeco, also spoke during the event. She explained that the project, which has a three-month duration and a budget of $250,000 USD, will be distributed across the nation to hundreds of flood victims for rehabilitation purposes and will focus on the most affected neighborhoods and citizens. Everyone needs better means of subsistence, according to Madam Mejeco, who identified the IRC as an international organization dedicated to serving humanity worldwide. The IRC focuses on conflict resolution, humanitarian efforts, and disaster relief, she noted.

Madam Mejeco said IRC has been assisting the National Disaster Management Agency in aiding flood victims, and she mentions how the cash transfer would assist in obtaining some of the necessities for their homes. At the same time, she urged recipients to make full use of the monies to buy supplies for repairing their homes, which had been destroyed by floods during the rainy season.

The recipients, who were overjoyed, expressed their gratitude to the Liberian government, through the National Disaster Management Agency and the International Rescue Committee, for responding so quickly to their requests during their trying times. They also pledged to use the funds as intended.
