Buchanan, Grand Bassa – The ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) Stephen A. Tolbert Memorial Hospital has received praise from the people of Buchanan and the neighboring settlements in Grand Bassa County for providing free, excellent medical care, calling the hospital an important source of healing and hope in the area.
In addition to providing free outpatient care to everyone in need, regardless of affiliation with the company, the hospital was first built to assist AML personnel and their dependents.
Hailing the hospital’s life saving impact, Angela Neese, a mother from the Sawmill Community said, “I have visited this hospital two times. Both of those moments were excellent due to the professionals work.”
Mercy Zahn Gboe, a resident of Flower Mills community added, “I came because my cousin brought her child here and was well treated. My father also brought my little brother here. He received all the needed medication free of charge.
Gladis Cooper from Kaytor Town noted the hospitalโs inclusive nature: โEven though my husband doesnโt work with AML, we still receive treatment here for free. They
treat everyone with care and respect.โ
The hospitalโs growing role in community healthcare is part of ArcelorMittal Liberiaโs wider Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment, which seeks to uplift lives in its operational areas through strategic investment in health, education, and infrastructure.
According to AMLโs Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Garfee Williams, the hospital is increasingly serving the broader public. โLast week alone, out of 339 consultations, 53 percent were non-AML patients,โ he revealed. โAML staff
accounted for 6 percent, dependents 19 percent, and contractors, subcontractors, and Phase Two project employees made up 22 percent.โ
To ensure uninterrupted service, AML regularly procures essential medicines and supplies based on actual demand data from both employee and community cases.
The hospital operates in full compliance with Ministry of Health guidelines and provides a wide range of services, including health education, immunizations, antenatal care, family planning, diagnostic imaging (X-ray and ultrasound),
laboratory testing, infectious disease treatment (including TB and HIV/AIDS), and general surgery. In the past month alone, the hospital successfully conducted more than 11 major operations.
Dr. Williams emphasized AMLโs ongoing commitment to healthcare improvement: โWe will continue enhancing the quality of care and expanding services to meet the
needs of our employees, their families, and the communities we proudly serve.โ
The expansion of the hospitalโs reach stands as a testament to ArcelorMittal Liberiaโs broader mission not only to help drive Liberiaโs economy, but to invest in the long-term well-being of its people, one patient and one community at a time.
