Monrovia, Liberia – The necessity of empowering women and fostering their leadership in all spheres of society has been emphasized by Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Sara Beysolow Nyanti, who has also attested to the great heights to which women may rise when given such support and resources.
Minister Nyanti delivered these remarks at the Women’s Situation Room (WSR) Three-Day Women’s Political Meditation and Peace Dialogues, which took place on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at the C. Cecil Dennis Auditorium at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to a release from the Foreign Ministry.
She said it was an honor to speak to the esteemed group at the Women’s Situation Room Liberia’s Mediation Dialogues event, calling herself a ray of hope and a force for transformation in her beloved nation.
While recalling her own path, which was characterized by obstacles and victories and exemplifies the tenacity and resolve that characterize Liberian women, Minister Nyanti also reminded Liberians of the path toward peace, security, and empowerment that is entwined with the collective narrative of women across Liberia who have shattered ceilings, broken barriers, and paved the way for future generations.
Minister Nyanti goes on to say that she had the honor of standing in for many women’s ambitions for a more inclusive, just, and equitable Liberia during the 2023 presidential elections, in addition to a political vision.
“I witnessed firsthand the power of women’s leadership in fostering dialogue, building bridges, and advocating for peace,” the female presidential contender continued.
“Today, we gather here to underscore the critical role of women in mediation and conflict resolution. The Women’s Situation Room Liberia has been instrumental in promoting a peaceful and inclusive electoral process, demonstrating that when women are at the forefront of peace initiatives, sustainable harmony is not just a possibility but a tangible reality”, Foreign Minister Beysolow Nyanti said.
The Foreign Minister of Liberia further stated that talks about women’s empowerment, leadership development, peace, and security are not just thematic focal points, but rather the cornerstones around which a stronger, more resilient Liberia will be built. She further added that through forums such as these, we can exchange experiences, collaborate on strategies, and reaffirm our commitment to a future in which every woman and girl can realize her full potential without hindrances.
The dialogue’s dean of the cabinet warns attendees not to be afraid to draw strength from the bravery of Liberian women who, in spite of hardship, go on to lead, inspire, and change their country. “Let us pledge to raise our voices, by acknowledging our contributions, and making sure that women have a legitimate seat at all tables where decisions are made.”
Minister Nyanti then exhorts everyone to uphold the spirit of harmony and cooperation that this occasion represents. Together, we can build a peaceful legacy, give women the confidence to lead at all levels, and pave the way for a Liberia where each person can make a positive difference in the stability and prosperity of our country.
The board chair of the Angie Brooks International Centre (ABIC) and former minister of Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Madam Olubanke King-Akerele, gave a thorough rundown of the three days of the Women’s Political, Mediation, and Peace Dialogues held in the Women’s Situation Room.
With the theme “Promoting Peaceful Electoral Environment and Community Security in Liberia,” the gathering provided an important forum for exchanging ideas and working together to make sure that elections in Liberia are inclusive and peaceful.
During her speech, King-Akerele stressed how important it is for women to advance democracy, peace, and security in Liberia. She emphasized the significance of utilizing women’s leadership and involvement to reduce election violence, improve community security, and preserve the integrity of democratic institutions by drawing on her vast experience in the diplomatic and governmental domains.
“The Women’s Political, Mediation, and Peace Dialogues represent a significant milestone in our collective efforts to advance gender equality and peacebuilding in Liberia,” remarked King-Akerele.
“By bringing together diverse stakeholders, including government officials, civil society representatives, and grassroots activists, we have laid the groundwork for fostering a more inclusive and representative democracy.”
Over the course of the three-day program, attendees held in-depth conversations about important topics impacting Liberia’s electoral environment, such as preventing conflict, implementing gender-responsive governance, and empowering women in political processes.
King-Akerele praised the Women’s Situation Room for its dedication to elevating the voices of women and pushing for legislative changes that put social justice and gender equality first.
In addition, King-Akerele emphasized the significance of multi-stakeholder cooperation and partnerships in achieving the objectives of peace, stability, and sustainable development.
