Monrovia, Liberia – Over 1300 Liberians who had been living in the Buduburam Refugee Camp in Ghana have been successfully repatriated, according to the Liberia government and the Liberia Refugee, Repatriation and Resettlement Commission (LRRRC). This important achievement represents a critical turning point in the ongoing efforts to assist and rehabilitate Liberians who have been uprooted by previous crises.
Foreign Minister Nyanti reported that government officials, representatives of the LRRRC, and representatives of several humanitarian groups welcomed the returnees with great warmth at the Lougatou border. In order to guarantee each returnee’s safety, dignity, and well-being, the repatriation procedure was carefully organized.
She added, “The returnees have been provided with comprehensive support services, such as access to educational and vocational training programs, temporary housing, and medical care.” These initiatives are meant to assist the repatriates settle in easily and develop into independent, contributing members of their communities.
Thousands of Liberians seeking refuge from civil wars found temporary shelter at the 1990-founded Buduburam Refugee Camp. Various attempts have been made throughout the years to either assist the voluntary return of refugees to Liberia or to integrate them locally in Ghana. The successful return demonstrates how dedicated the Liberian government and its international allies are to protecting the rights and dignity of refugees.
