Gov’t Targets Underage Gambling in Montserrado

As NLA Seized Illegal Mini Slot Machines

Monrovia, Liberia – The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has increased raids on illegal Mini Slot Machine operators in Montserrado County as authorities take decisive measures to shut down unlawful gaming operations and protect children from gambling exposure.

With the goal to fulfill its legal obligation to regulate and supervise all lottery and gaming activities in Liberia, the NLA has put together three specialized enforcement teams from its Operations Division, Inspectorate Division, Monitoring and Evaluation Department, and Office of the Director General.

Targets of the coordinated effort include unlicensed operators, unapproved installations, and businesses allegedly allowing minors to bet. According to NLA officials, the raids, which are currently taking place in several districts, are concentrated on locating and shutting down illicit Mini Slot Machine hubs, seizing unapproved machines, enforcing age restrictions, performing on-the-spot compliance inspections, and recording infractions for potential legal action.

Deputy Director General for Operations Hon. Christian K. Cooper, who is in charge of the operation, called the growing number of complaints of minors participating in Mini Slot Machine activities concerning and intolerable. “Protecting minors from gambling exposure remains a top priority of the Authority,” Cooper declared, warning that operators who allow children access to gaming facilities will face immediate closure of their premises, revocation of licenses, heavy fines, and possible criminal prosecution.

Growing worries over the uncontrolled proliferation of Mini Slot Machines in neighborhoods, on street corners, and close to school zones throughout Montserrado County prompted a stronger crackdown. Regulators claim that this kind of growth poses serious social hazards and compromises national gaming standards.

Cooper underlined that the enforcement campaign’s goals are to clean up the gaming ecosystem and encourage responsible gaming rather than to stifle respectable companies. “We remain resolute in eliminating unauthorized gaming hubs operating outside approved guidelines,” he said.

To guarantee that enforcement operations are conducted legally and expertly, the NLA sid, it is collaborating closely with state security services. NLA authorities also issued a warning that those who oppose enforcement actions may face legal consequences.

In an effort to protect the integrity of Liberia’s gaming industry, the NLA invites locals to report illicit gaming operations occurring in their neighborhoods. The Authority claims that despite the escalating raids, it is still dedicated to creating a regulated, open, and socially conscious gaming sector that both protects vulnerable persons and advances national development.
