As Pres. Boakai Breaks Ground For US$5M Chinese Initiative

Monrovia, Liberia – A US$ 5.5 million initiative was officially launched by President of the Republic of Liberia Joseph N. Boakai at the state-run radio station, Liberia Broadcasting System (LBS).

The project’s objective is to construct a modern radio and television complex under Chinese government support.

President Boakai said, the new television and radio expansion project is possible because of the People’s Republic of China’s generous support during the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, August 16, 2024 in Paynesville. The Liberian Leader described the project as a massive donation to the Republic of Liberia.

The project, in his opinion, is much more than just the building of a physical media center; it is a monument to Liberia’s unwavering support of a free and active press, the unrestricted expression of opinions, and the availability of information regarding national governance.

In a world where knowledge is a tremendous force, he said, increasing broadcasting capabilities will guarantee that all voices and viewpoints be heard.

In addition to providing the people with the knowledge they require, the project, according to the Liberian leader, will also cultivate an informed populace, which is essential for a robust and engaged democracy.

“Information, in my opinion, is the essential component of education. And as everyone will agree, the cornerstone of any country’s progress is education.”

According to President Boakai, improving the media house capacity to provide high-quality educational content would undoubtedly be greatly aided by the growth of facilities and channels for the public to get important information.

“Moreover, it will aid us in analyzing the subtleties of governance and additionally facilitate us in gathering data from the populace to make our decision-making procedures more pertinent.”

According to President Boakai, by expanding the reach and allocating outlets for feedback, Liberians can offer priceless resources for health, education, agriculture, and civil rights as well as encouragement of lifelong learning.

According to the Liberian leader, the project would help close gaps in interactions between population centers and create new opportunities for individuals, advancing both personal and community development.

Representing the People’s Republic of China, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Yin Chengwu said, the Chinese government will assist the Liberian government in renovating and growing the LBS, characterizing the project as a significant turning point in the LBS’s history, in compliance with the pertinent agreement between China and Liberia.

Amb. Chengwu continued, saying that when the project is over, the LBS would have a more contemporary workspace and more functional technology, which will enhance its ability to produce, broadcast, and transmit programs.

He explained that the initiative would signal a critical turning point in the LBS’s development and that it will significantly improve the LBS.

“The project is crucial to advancing social progress and providing for Liberians’ needs. The Chinese Envoy noted that as one of the most important avenues for disseminating information across the country, the LBS has significantly aided in the social development of Liberia.”
