Monrovia, Liberia – Hungary and Liberia have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to prolong the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program for the years 2024–2026. This is a major step toward strengthening their educational collaboration. The signing ceremony was held at the Hungarian Embassy in Accra.
Her Excellency Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Liberia, was represented by Phillip Garjay Innis, Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of Liberia in Accra, who signed on her behalf, while His Excellency Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, was represented by His Excellency Tamás Endre Fehér, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Liberia.
A mainstay of Hungary’s educational diplomacy, the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program provides up to 25 annual scholarships to Liberian students specializing in subjects vital to the country’s progress, such as agriculture, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and medical and health sciences. Scholarships are available for study at several levels of education: up to five undergraduate (BA/BSc), up to ten graduate (MA/MSc), up to five one-tier Master’s (OTM) scholarships, an integrated academic program where students pursue master’s and bachelor’s degrees in fields like law, medicine, and architecture, and up to five doctoral scholarships annually.
The scholarship program’s expansion demonstrates Hungary and Liberia’s shared commitment to strengthening their bilateral ties via academic and professional exchanges. It is in line with His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr.’s ARREST agenda, which prioritizes education at the center of Liberia’s national development plan. This will make it easier for Liberians to pursue higher education abroad and put them in a position to make significant contributions to the development of their nation.
Under the direction of President Boakai Sr., the principal planner of Liberia’s foreign policy, and under the leadership of Foreign Minister Nyanti, the nation’s diplomatic interactions have been distinguished by a distinct emphasis on cultivating international alliances that directly benefit the Liberian populace. Because of this vision and its energizing leadership, Liberia is still regarded as a valued partner in the international community.
