Harper City, Maryland County – Maryland County hosted a one-day football tournament between its two most popular districts, Harper District and Pleebo District in celebration of the birthday of former Liberian President William V. S. Tubman. The event took place at the Martha Tubman Stadium in Harper City and marked the first edition of the tournament dedicated to honoring the legacy of the late statesman, who hailed from Maryland County.

The competition brought together both boys’ and girls’ teams from the two districts, signifying unity, sportsmanship, and respect of Tubman’s services to Liberia and his home county.
Speaking to reporters ahead of the matches, representatives of both sides stated their excitement and preparedness to use the competition as preparation for the next National County Sports Meet. Maryland County is scheduled to host one of the group stage matches on December 14, 2025, and teams are keen to exhibit their strength.
Harper District defeated Pleebo District 1-0 in a fiercely fought girls’ division match. The boys’ match was as exciting ending 3–3 at full time. The game proceeded to a penalty shootout, where Pleebo District defeated Harper District 5–4 to earn victory. Harper District’s boys wore blue jerseys, while Pleebo District dressed in green.

County officials recognized exceptional performers for their skill, self-control, and sportsmanship by awarding them at the end of the competition. Officials praised the event for promoting unity and reinforcing a common commitment to maintaining peace, collaboration, and a robust sporting culture in Maryland County.
The inaugural edition of the William V. S. Tubman Football Tournament has created a strong foundation for what many believe will become an annual event celebrating history, athletics, and community pride in Maryland County.
