Monrovia, Liberia – Following an elected congress that saw the election of new leaders, the Federation of International Basketball Association removed the ban imposed on the Liberia Basketball Association on November 27, 2023. In its correspondence with the local organisation, FIBA also authorised Liberian clubs and the National Basketball Team of Liberia to begin taking part in FIBA competitions.
However, Monrovia City Court has placed a ban on every basketball activity at the Liberia Basketball Association following a writ of preliminary injunction. In response to a complaint submitted by Jake Kabakole, the unsuccessful presidential candidate, a Writ of Preliminary Injunction was served.
The Vice President for Administration, Yanquey Borsay, served a writ in his capacity as Acting President of the Liberia Basketball Association. Until the judge heard the case on December 18, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., the writ of injunction temporarily halted and prohibited all basketball-related activity under the Abraham Samukai administration.
Following the election, Jake Kabakole, the losing candidate, expressed dissatisfaction over the fact that there were more voters than eligible voters. Although 51 votes were counted, he claimed that only 49 people were eligible to vote and were present to cast their ballot. According to the official results, Abraham Samukai received 26 votes, one more than Jake Kabakole.
