Monrovia- The National Elections Commission (NEC) Board of Commissioners (BOC) hosted an information-sharing and fact-finding session with a joint high power delegation of the One United Nations, ambassadorial missions, as well as international and regional partners on the NEC compound on 9th Street, in Sinkor Monrovia-Liberia, on Friday, September 23.
The NEC is moving toward its voter registration procedure, thus this gathering is a first of its type, bringing the world community to Liberia together to see the Commission. The UN and its regional and international partners organized the gathering in Liberia.
The NEC’s Chairwoman, Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, welcomed the team and stated that the Commission was pleased to share the NEC’s concerns and operations with the delegation.
The delegation’s visit occurs while the NEC is preparing to conduct the voter registration drive and the general elections in Liberia in 2023, according to the NEC boss.
The combined delegation’s visit exemplifies the significance the international community places on the electoral processes leading up to the holding of the general elections in 2023, according to UN Resident Coordinator in Liberia Niels Scott. According to Ambassador Scott, the delegation came to learn how things are going and what assistance the Commission might need. The group hopes that their support of the Commission during their visit would increase public confidence in the Commission’s work.
The United Nations, ambassadorial missions from the European Union (EU), the United States of America, Sweden, Germany, and Great Britain, as well as the ECOWAS Commission, made up the joint delegation of the international community. Other missions that served as ambassadors came from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Cameroon, and Nigeria. Along with the ambassador of Lebanon, the meeting included the African Development Bank’s (ACDB) country managing director.
