Plan UK Team Features LWEP Recipients to Improve Livelihoods

Monrovia, Liberia – Women in Nyehn Town, Todee district, lower Montserrado County, took center stage on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, when an international delegation led by Plan UK made a technical field visit to the community to interact directly with recipients of the Liberia Women Empowerment Project (LWEP), a major program that aims to improve women’s economic opportunities and means of subsistence.

The visit, which was organized by the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MGCSP) and LWEP service providers, offered local women a rare opportunity to discuss openly how the project is affecting their everyday lives, businesses, and families.

The team, which comprised representatives from Plan International Liberia, other LWEP service provider organizations, the Project Management Unit, Montserrado County authorities, and community leaders, was cordially received by Nyehn Town people during the visit. Additionally, the Town Chief and local authorities formally welcomed the team, demonstrating the value of community ownership in development initiatives.

Speaking, the Montserrado County Gender Coordinator described the goals of LWEP in Todee District, stressing that the initiative is intended to develop women’s resilience, confidence, and skills in addition to provide financial help.

The Minister of Gender, for her part, emphasized that true development starts when citizens are actively involved in decisions that impact their lives and reiterated her commitment to making sure that women in rural communities like Nyehn Town are not left behind.

However, beneficiaries testified about how having access to savings, small loans, and business support has enabled them to increase petty trading, support their children’s education, and lessen household hardship during interactions with women-led businesses and Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs).

For the first time, we feel seen and heard. This project is helping us stand on our own feet and contribute meaningfully to our homes and community,” one woman beneficiary said.

Additionally, the delegation held talks about transparency and accountability, including a thorough explanation of the Grievance Redress Mechanism. Particularly in cases of gender-based violence, community members were taught how to voice concerns, offer feedback, and use referral channels.

LWEP, on the other hand, is a $44.6 million World Bank-funded initiative carried out by the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection in collaboration with both domestic and foreign partners. By encouraging gender-responsive growth and boosting the empowerment of women and girls, the project promotes the Government of Liberia’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.

The residents of Nyehn Town, the visit was more than just a standard inspection; it was an indication that government agencies and development partners are prepared to go out to the local community, hear what they have to say, and tailor programs to actual needs.
